Have you ever heard that people who believe in science can’t possibly believe in the Bible? Well, guess what? Science has been gradually catching up to the Bible. In this study, we’ll see that even though the bible isn't a scientific book it is scientifically accurate.

The Bible and Astronomy - the branch of science that deals with celestial objects, space, and the physical universe as a whole.

Do you know how many stars there are in heaven?

• Jeremiah 33:22 (NIV) I will make the descendants of David my servant and the Levites who minister before me as countless as the stars in the sky and as measureless as the sand on the seashore.

Only about 3,000 can be seen with the naked eye. Astronomers have tried using math to make an educated guess of how many stars there are. They have estimated that there can be as much as 1 trillion stars. Even before they tried to estimate how many there are the bible already teaches us, it's just too many to count! The Bible also says that each star is unique.

• 1 Corinthians 15:41 (NKJV) There is one glory of the sun, another glory of the moon, and another glory of the stars; for one star differs from another star in glory.

All stars look alike to the naked eye. Even when seen through a telescope, they seem to be just points of light. However, analysis of their light spectra reveals that each is unique and different from all others.

Who discovered the earth was round?

• Isaiah 40:22 (NKJV) It is He who sits above the circle of the earth

• Job 26:7 (NKJV) He stretches out the north over empty space; He hangs the earth on nothing.

Over 2,000 years ago, the Greek philosopher Aristotle had it all figured out. In his book 'On the Heveans', he argued that you see different sets of stars in the night sky depending on where you are. If the Earth was flat, then at any given time we would all see the same stars, but we don't. Another Greek thinker and mathematician, Eratosthenes, went further and managed to measure the Earth's circumference. At a time when some believed that the earth sat on a large animal or a giant (1500BC), the Bible spoke of the earth’s free float in space. Science didn’t discover that the earth hangs on nothing until 1650.

The Bible and Meteorology - the branch of science concerned with the processes and phenomena of the atmosphere, especially as a means of forecasting the weather.

Can you explain the general patterns of atmospheric circulation?

• Ecclesiastes 1:6 (NKJV) The wind goes toward the south, And turns around to the north; The wind whirls about continually, And comes again on its circuit.

Atmospheric circulation is the movement of air at all levels of the atmosphere over all parts of the planet. Even with disruptions like weather fronts and storms, there is a consistent pattern to how air moves around our planet’s atmosphere. This pattern, called atmospheric circulation, is caused because the Sun heats the Earth more at the equator than at the poles. It's also affected by the spin of the Earth.

It was not always known that air has weight. Do you know when this was scientifically proven?

• Job 28:25 (NKJV) To establish a weight for the wind, And apportion the waters by measure.

It was actually a mathematician named Evangelista Torricelli who is the first on record to demonstrate and scientifically prove that air has weight only about 300 years ago. His experiment to prove this fact was prompted by the observation that water from a mineshaft could only be pumped upward to reach a certain height.

The Bible and Biology - the natural science that studies life and living organisms, including their physical structure, chemical processes, molecular interactions, physiological mechanisms and development.

Leviticus 17:11 (NKJV) ‘For the life of the flesh is in the blood, and I have given it to you upon the altar to make atonement for your souls; for it is the blood that makes atonement for the soul.’

The book of Leviticus (written prior to 1400 BC) describes the value of blood. The blood carries water and nourishment to every cell, maintains the body’s temperature, and removes the waste material of the body’s cells. The blood also carries oxygen from the lungs throughout the body. In 1616, William Harvey discovered that blood circulation is the key factor in physical life—confirming what the Bible revealed 3,000 years earlier.

Did you know the Bible speaks about mental health? What can we learn from the verses below?

• Proverbs 17:22 (NKJV) A merry heart does good, like medicine, But a broken spirit dries the bones.

• Proverbs 14:30 (NKJV) A sound heart is life to the body, But envy is rottenness to the bones

• Proverbs 15:30 (NKJV) The light of the eyes rejoices the heart, And a good report makes the bones healthy.

It is a proven fact that a person’s mental and spiritual health is strongly correlated with physical health. The Bible revealed this to us with these statements (and others) written by King Solomon about 950 BC. Several studies have linked depression to low bone mass and osteoporosis (condition that weakens bones).

Have you ever wondered why God instructed that males be circumcised on the 8th day?

Leviticus 12:3 (NKJV) And on the eighth day the flesh of his foreskin shall be circumcised.

The Bible instructs that male babies are to be circumcised on the eighth day (Genesis 17:12). Medical science has now discovered that this is the day that the clotting factor in the blood, called prothrombin, is the highest. It reaches its peak on the eighth day. Medical science has also discovered that this is when the human body’s immune system is at its peak. I believe this is not just a random day God chose. He knows how he made us.

The Bible and Hydrology - the branch of science concerned with the properties of the earth's water, and especially its movement in relation to land.

What are the steps of the hydrologic cycle?

• Job 36:27-29 (NKJV) For He draws up drops of water, Which distill as rain from the mist, Which the clouds drop down And pour abundantly on man. Indeed, can anyone understand the spreading of clouds, The thunder from His canopy?

• Psalm 135:7 (NKJV) He causes the vapors to ascend from the ends of the earth; He makes lightning for the rain; He brings the wind out of His treasuries.

• Jeremiah 10:13 (NKJV) When He utters His voice, There is a multitude of waters in the heavens: “And He causes the vapors to ascend from the ends of the earth. He makes lightning for the rain, He brings the wind out of His treasuries.

• Job 26:8 (NKJV) He binds up the water in His thick clouds, Yet the clouds are not broken under it.

The hydrologic cycle involves the continuous circulation of water in the Earth-Atmosphere system. At its core, the water cycle is the motion of the water from the ground to the atmosphere and back again. This simple verse has remarkable scientific insight. God teaches us the processes of evaporation, translation aloft by atmospheric circulation, condensation and precipitation.

What are hydrothermal vents?

• Genesis 7:11 (NKJV) In the six hundredth year of Noah’s life, in the second month, the seventeenth day of the month, on that day all the fountains of the great deep were broken up, and the windows of heaven were opened.

• Job 38:16 (NKJV) Have you entered the springs of the sea? Or have you walked in search of the depths?

Hydrothermal vents are like geysers, or hot springs, on the ocean floor. These vents are described in two books of the Bible written before 1400BC—more than 3,000 years before their discovery by science.

The Bible and Oceanography - the branch of science that deals with the physical and biological properties and phenomena of the sea.

What can we learn about the ocean from the verse below?

• Psalm 8:8 (NKJV) The birds of the air, And the fish of the sea That pass through the paths of the seas.

Matthew Maury (1806–1873) is considered the father of oceanography. He noticed the expression “paths of the sea” in Psalm 8:8 (written 2,800 years ago) and said, “If God said there are paths in the sea, I am going to find them.” Maury then took God at His word and went looking for these paths, and we are indebted to his discovery of the warm and cold continental currents. His vital book on oceanography is still in print today.
